Nebraska Permit Study Guide

Taking the DMV permit test in Nebraska does not have to be scary if you are prepared.  Use this study guide, and take the permit practice test to help make the process easy.

In order to receive a learner’s permit in Nebraska, applicants must first pass the written test.  The test will include questions concerning traffic laws in Nebraska, as well as road signs and safe driving practices.  Since over 40% of permit test takers In Nebraska fail on the first try, it is a good idea to spend extra time preparing yourself for the test. 

The best way to prepare for your test is by studying the State of Nebraska Driver’s Manual. The test questions you will have to answer will be based on the information found in this booklet.

How is the Test Formatted?

The exam consists of up to 50 questions that are multiple choice and true/false type. You must receive a score of 80 percent in order to pass. This means that you must answer at least 40 questions correctly. If you fail, then you will have to re-take the test. There is no limit on how many times you can take the test, but you must wait at least one day.  The sooner you pass, the sooner you will be driving and gaining practical experience.

What's Important to Study?

While every part of the manual is important to read, there some sections that are primarily administrative in content.  These are not as crucial as other chapters that cover actual driving laws and strategies.   Sections of the Nebraska drivers handbook that new drivers should focus on in order to pass the test include the following:

  • You should know the details of different licenses and permits, specifically the learner’s permit for which you are applying.  Specifics of the LPD permit are found in section 1B-4 on page 3.
  • Since provisional drivers in Nebraska can have their permit suspended for receiving 3 or more points, you should understand the rules for suspension and the point system found on pages 14-16.  Additionally brush up on the rules for underage drinking limits found in section 1E-6
  • An important piece to study is section 3 - Signs, Signals and Markings (pages 30-42), since up to a third of the test deals with road signs.  You should be able to identify a signs meaning by its color (p. 32) and shape (p33).
  • Section 4 - Rules of the Road (pages 45-56) addresses the nuts and bolts of Nebraska driving laws that are essential to understand.
  • All drivers can benefit from knowing the strategies outlined in Section 5 – Special Driving Conditions.  Driving a car involves much more than physical skill operating the controls.  Good judgment is required to handle a variety of driving situations.
  • The final section to study is Section 6 - Sharing the Road (pages 63-66).  Expect questions on the test that relate to how to behave around bicycles, busses and trucks.
