Kansas Permit Study Guide

Taking the written permit test in Kansas does not have to be intimidating.  This study guide, along with the permit practice test will help make the process easy.

If you're looking to earn your driver's permit so that you can get on the road, you will need to study before you take the permit test. Kansas has implemented a Graduated Driver's License (GDL) program that ensures that teens are rigorously tested before they start driving. Thankfully, there's an official drivers manual for you to study! You can find the Kansas Driving Handbook here. This official driving handbook contains everything you need to know about driving and traffic laws in the state of Kansas.

What's on the Test?

The driver's permit test consists of 25 multiple choice questions concerning both Kansas driving laws, and road signs, found in the official state handbook. You must answer at least 20 of the questions correctly in order to pass.

If you don't pass the written test on your first attempt, you can take the test again the next day if you wish to do so. You will have four chances to pass the written test, but if you fail four times, you will be barred from taking the test again for six months.

What Should Be My Main Focus?

The handbook provided by the state might seem a little daunting.  While you should read the whole text, there are certain areas you can focus on for the test.  The two main sections that are most crucial to study are:

  • Rules of the Road (page 11)  This provides the nuts and bolts of Kansas traffic laws.
  • Signs, Signals and Markings (page 29)  You should be able to identify road signs by their shape and color.

Additional passages that are frequently found on the test include:

  • Effects of Alcohol and Drugs on Driving (page 28)
  • Avoid Traffic Accidents (page 46)
  • Emergencies (page 49)
  • Defensive Driving (page 51)

You should also be familiar with the sections on interstate freeway driving (page 54), and how to share the road with trucks, motorcycles and bicycles (page 57)

An excellent tool to assist you with studying can be found in the Kansas permit practice test.  Practicing with these questions will help give you a better idea of both the structure and the content of the actual written permit test.
