West Virginia Permit Study Guide

The West Virginia DMV permit test does not have to be intimidating if you are prepared.  Make the process easy by using this study guide, and taking the permit practice test.

Earning a driver's license is a special moment in everyone's life, which is why it is important to be fully prepared to take the permit test, which is the first step in a process that will allow you to eventually obtain a full license. To get ready for the written knowledge test, it's recommended that you take time to study the West Virginia Driver's Licensing Handbook

Test Structure and Details

The written test will be comprised solely of information found in the Driver’s Licensing Handbook.  The test contains 25 questions, and you will need to answer 19 questions correctly, or 76 percent.  The format of the test is multiple choice, with 4 choices per question.

Relevant Chapters and Sections

The majority of the West Virginia handbook is worthy of study, though there are a few chapters and sections that are essential to pass the permit test. These specific sections require extra studying in order to ensure that you pass the test.

The first section that requires your attention concerns the details of the rules for the instruction permit and the graduated licensing system.  This information can be found in Chapter 1, pages 8-11 of the driver's handbook.

Expect questions on the test from Chapter 3, pages 19-21, labeled as Driving Under the Influence. This covers everything from underage drinking and driving to penalties for driving under the influence.

Otherwise, the rest of the test covers your knowledge of traffic laws, signage and what to do in specific driving situations.  It is important to study much of Chapter 5, titled Traffic Control Devices, which focuses on the signs and traffic signals that you will need to know for the test.

Following this, Chapter 6 is likely the most important in the entire handbook. Titled Traffic Laws and Rules of the Road, this chapter gives you all the information on driving laws in West Virginia.  Here you will find information on sharing the road with pedestrians and vehicles, as well as school bus rules, changing lanes and speed limits.

Chapters 7, 8 and 9 contain strategies for driving in certain conditions, such as freeway driving, driving in adverse weather and how to handle emergency situations. The test will likely have questions on what to do if you find yourself driving and these scenarios arise.   All drivers can benefit from studying about bad driving habits and challenging road and traffic conditions.

Once you have thoroughly read the handbook, it is a good idea to practice with the questions found on the West Virginia practice test.  This is designed to help applicants get a feel for the way questions are asked, as well the type of information that will be tested.
