Studying for the written driver permit test in South Carolina is crucial to your success. The South Carolina knowledge test needs to be taken by all drivers, including those who are obtaining a permit for the first time. There are 25 multiple choice questions that are pulled from a total of 200 questions in the database. A score of 80 percent must be obtained to pass.

The test centers around information related to traffic laws in South Carolina, as well as how to handle specific driving situations.  Therefore you can pass over the administrative sections of the handbook, such the opening section on pages 7-22.  The exception to this is any information on the rules of the learners permit itself, found on page 9, which you will need to know.

Other than that, most of the middle section of the handbook, Chapter 3, pages 23-66 is essential to study.  Pages 23-31 address basic traffic laws that you should know.  Pages 31-40 discuss a variety of driving conditions, and the best practices to follow for safe driving.  You are also responsible for knowing the laws concerning impaired driving found on page 55. 

Finally you would benefit from paying special attention to Chapter 7: Traffic Signs, Signals, Markings starting on page 171, as there will likely be road sign questions on the permit test.  All of this information can be viewed in advance of taking the exam to understand all of the signs that you would encounter on the road as well as the markings on the road.
