Rhode Island Permit Study Guide

Taking the DMV permit test in Rhode Island does not have to be intimidating.  Use this study guide, and take the permit practice test to help make the process easy.

After completing the required driver education course, applicants for a Rhode Island Instruction permit must pass a written test. The computerized test is in place to make sure that all learners are equipped with the knowledge they need in order to stay safe as they start to drive in Rhode Island.  The best way to study for the computerized test is to read the Rhode Island Driver's Manual. This document is put together by the DMV and contains all the information you need to know in order to pass the test.

How is the Test Organized?

You have a time period of 90 minutes in which to complete the computerized test, but most people take half an hour to finish it. The test consists of 50 multiple choice questions that will ask you about your knowledge of basic road safety, traffic signs, driving principles and traffic laws in Rhode Island. You must receive a score at least 80% in order to pass the test.

Applicants who fail the computerized test must wait 30 days before taking it again. If you pass the test, then you must hold the Limited Instructional Permit for at least six months before applying for a Limited Provisional License.

What Should I Focus on as I Study?

You should read every part of the driver's manual, but there are some areas on which test takers should focus. The key sections of the manual include:

  • Part I – Know the details for the new driver licensing system on pages 8-13.
  • Part II - Basic Driving Skills and Safety Rules (pages 15-28)  This describes the principles for basic driving maneuvers.
  • Part III - Signs, Signals and Roadway Markings (pages 29-38)  Expect a few road signs questions on the test.  You can also review the road signs inside the front and back covers.
  • Part IV – Driving Emergencies (pages 40-44)  Know the strategies for how to handle a variety of unexpected driving situations.
  • Part VII –Sharing the Road Safely (pages 47-50)  Provides guidelines on how to co-exist with trucks, buses, pedestrians and bikes.
  • Part VIII - Laws You Must Know (pages 51-52)  Details laws specific to Rhode Island.
  • Part IX - Drinking and Driving (pages 53-55)  All test takers should understand the effects of alcohol on driving and the consequences of driving under the influence.

In addition to reading the Drivers Manual thoroughly, you can test your knowledge with the online Rhode Island practice test.  These practice questions will help you get an idea for the content of the actual test, as well as how the test is structured.

Driving is a privilege, not a right.  By using the Rhode Island official state Driver's Manual to study and taking the practice test, you can help prepare yourself, and become a safe and conscientious driver before you ever sit behind the wheel. Good luck!
