The permit test includes a written test to assess your knowledge of traffic laws and safe driving practices.  There is also a road signs test which covers both regulatory signs and warning signs.  The exact number of questions asked on the test and the questions that you are asked varies from year to year and the area you are located in. In general, there are 20-25 multiple choice questions on the test. Each question typically has four or five answers to choose from. In order to earn a passing score, you must answer 80 percent of the questions correctly. The test is a computer based, multiple choice test, and each question usually has 4 answer choices to choose from.  Many of the questions consist of common-sense knowledge that every driver should know, and other questions are drawn directly from the official North Carolina driver's manual.
