Michigan Permit Study Guide

Taking the permit test in Michigan can be intimidating for some.  Using this study guide and taking the permit practice test will help to ease the process.

The written exam to receive a permit is multiple choice, and will be 50 questions in length. In order to pass the exam, a 70 percent or higher must be achieved.  The written exam will include:

  • Laws and regulations
  • Signs and signals

The Michigan State driver guidebook is, is entitled “What Every Driver Must Know.” This will be your primary study resource for the written permit test.  It includes a variety of sections, some of which you should pay special attention. The sections that are likely to be tested include:

  • Section 6: Seat Belts, Safety Seats, & Airbags (page 65)
  • Section 7: Signs, Pavement Markings and Signals (page 68)
  • Section 8: Basic Skills, Law, & Safety (page 86)
  • Section 9: Sharing the Road Safely – Be Courteous (page 104)
  • Section 10: Emergencies & Special Situations (page 122)

There is also a “Test Your Safe Driving Knowledge” in the Manual on page 145 that can be used as a practice test to familiarize yourself with the format.  Study the answers provided to help you determine whether you would have passed or not.
