Georgia Permit Study Guide

Taking the DDS permit test in Georgia does not have to be intimidating.  Using this study guide, and taking the permit practice test will help make the process easy.

The process of earning your driver’s permit in the state of Georgia is very similar to the process followed in other states. After passing a visual exam and a written test, you will be given a learner’s permit that you must keep for one year before taking the driving portion of the test. You will also need to complete a driver education course unless you are an adult over the age of 18. The most important factor in passing the written portion of the Georgia driver’s permit test is to study the official Georgia driver’s manual provided by the Georgia Department of Driver Services.

Taking the Written Test

The written part of the Georgia permit test is called the Knowledge Exam. This test focuses on knowing the road rules and road signs. This information can be found in the driver’s manual. First you will take a Road Rules Test is to assess your understanding of driver responsibility, knowledge of laws and safe driving practices. The road rules section also consists of 20 multiple choice questions with three answer choices for each question.  In order to earn a passing grade, you must answer at least 15 of these questions correctly.   The Road Signs Test also consists of 20 multiple choice questions and asks you to identify certain signs, signals and markers, and you must correctly answer at least 15 of those questions correctly as well.

Important Topics to Study

The Knowledge Exam solely asks questions about road rules and road signs. You should pay special attention to the section of the driver’s manual that discusses this information. It is a good idea to become familiar with the entire manual, but some sections are more important than others. Here are the page numbers for the most important sections:

  • Traffic Laws – Page 22
  • Signs, Signals and Markings – Page 34
  • Safety Guidelines – Page 44
  • Sharing the Road – Page 48

In order to make sure that you retain all of the information provided in these sections, you can use study tools such as notes and flash cards, or ask a friend to help quiz you.

Teen Driver Resources

Teen drivers must adhere to certain rules while driving with a learner’s permit. Because of this, it is important for teens to fully understand Joshua’s Law, school attendance requirements and driving restrictions. You can find this information on page 30 of the driver’s manual and on the official Georgia DDS website.

Finally you should also take the Georgia permit practice test. The practice test will help give you a general idea of what kinds of questions will be asked on the test and how they will be worded.
