Connecticut Permit Study Guide

Preparing for the Connecticut permit test at the DMV does not have to be intimidating.  Make the process easy by using this study guide, and taking the permit practice test.

In its official Connecticut Driver's Manual, the state of Connecticut reminds its residents "driving is a privilege and not a right." The state encourages all drivers to treat the learning experience as a lifelong part of being a safe driver on the road. Teen drivers will find valuable information within the 61 pages of the manual and will want to study this document while preparing for the written driving test.

Connecticut Written Test Format

There are 25 questions on Connecticut's knowledge test that teens must answer during the application for a learner's permit. Test takers need to get at least 20 questions right to pass. The state charges $40 to take the test, and teens should sign up https://www.dmvteen.ct.gov/dmv/do-it-online for a time to take the test through Connecticut's online system. Note that the fee for the learner's permit is an additional $19 that must be paid in addition to the testing fee.

Don't Forget to Study These Chapters

The Connecticut Driver's Manual contains several sections of information that cover many aspects of driving, but there are some chapters and passages that teens will find more valuable when studying to take the written test. For example, since this is a permit test, Connecticut expects its teen drivers to know the rules and restrictions for teen licensing on pages 4 - 9.

Otherwise the most important chapters of the manual to study are:

  • Chapter 3 Driving Behaviors – This section offers important strategies for safe driving in various situations.  In addition, teens will want to take note of the information starting on page 33 regarding driving while intoxicated.   Connecticut is a "zero tolerance" state and forbids driving by anyone under the age of 21 with any measurable blood alcohol content.
  • Chapter 4 Road Safety – Looks into the nuts and bolts of Connecticut traffic laws, which you will need to know in some numeric detail. Vital road rules, proper driving behaviors and emergency procedures are important to know
  • Chapter 5 Know the Road – Features common signage and roadway symbols.  For the test, you will be required to understand the meaning and detail of all road signs and markings, including by shape and color.

In addition to studying the Manual, test takers will want to take the Connecticut permit practice test.  Practicing with these questions will help users familiarize themselves with both the format of the test, and the content of the questions.
