Arizona Permit Study Guide

Taking the MVD permit test in Arizona does not have to be challenging.  Using this study guide, and taking the permit practice test will help make the process easy.

Driving rules are similar across the nation; however, each state tends to have a few unique laws. Before taking a driver's test, young drivers in Arizona should study the Arizona Driver’s License Manual and become familiar with each of the important driving rules required of licensed drivers.

Arizona Driving Test Details

The state of Arizona permit test is delivered on a computer with a touch-screen. Test takers must obtain a score of at least 80 percent to pass the written exam. The test has 30 questions, so at least 24 questions must be answered correctly. Each of the questions is in multiple choice format.

Navigating the Arizona Driving Manual

The test questions will cover everything from rules of the road, to road signs and vehicle safety.  Test takers should expect to be tested on a variety of driving-related topics such as the meaning of certain road signs and the appropriate measures to take in different situations.

The Arizona Driving Manual provides helpful advice for new drivers, so reading through the official driving manual will help a new driver get familiar with basic driving tips.  When studying the manual, remember that the permit test will cover only your knowledge of traffic laws and safe driving practices.  Administrative information is not likely to be tested.  There are some key chapters to read, such as:

  • Section 2: Safe Driving Practices.  For example you should know tips such as it is recommended to use your turn signal for 4 seconds before turning.
  • Section 3 which offers details on Roadway and Vehicle Knowledge.  Pay special attention to knowing the road signs and pavement markings on pages 33-38.  For example you will have to know the meaning of signs by their shape for the test.
  • Section 5 contains important strategies such as regulating following distance for avoiding crashes.  You should also know the alcohol and driving rules on pages 46-47 and pages 50-52.

Note that in its practice tests, the state suggests that more than one answer might be correct. The correct choice might be the best answer rather than the only answer.

Practicing the Written Test

The state manual provides a sample test within its driving manual on page 56.

After studying the manual, it is a good idea to take our permit practice test to check your knowledge before paying to take the test at the MVD.
